The Crossing organization is committed to always providing the most complete and accurate information possible about the body of water we use for the event. In keeping with this commitment to transparency, we would like to share the following update.
On Monday, we became aware of a video showing a shark swimming near a seal carcass. The footage, recorded a few days earlier, was shared with us by its author, whom we contacted. Based on their description, the sighting occurred approximately 4 to 5 km east of the Bonami Rocks Point in Dalhousie—about 4 to 5 km from the Crossing course.
Due to our limited expertise, we are unable to identify the shark species, though the video clearly shows a dorsal fin. Without a confirmed identification, we cannot assess the potential risk to humans.
Shark presence in the Baie des Chaleurs is not unheard of but remains relatively rare. Following discussions, it appears these occasional visitors are usually seen east of Heron Island. We have been aware of this possibility for several years, which is why, since the event’s relaunch in 2022, we have been tracking tagged sharks via the Ocearch Tracker. However, it is important to note that not all sharks are equipped with tracking devices, which would be the case here.
In our effort to gather the most reliable information, we reached out to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, local fishers, and recreational boaters. So far, we have not received confirmation of any additional sightings. Given the nomadic nature of sharks, it is unlikely that the individual seen is still in the area on the day of the event; however, we cannot guarantee its absence.
We understand that this information may influence some swimmers' willingness to participate. If that is the case for you, we kindly ask that you inform us as soon as possible so we can have an up-to-date picture of the situation.
We intend to provide a status update by next Thursday, based on continued communication with local fishers, boaters, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. That said, it is important to understand that these partners are not part of a dedicated shark research team.
Finally, we will send by postal mail merchandise (bathing caps, Buffs, etc) to those who will choose not to be at the starting line.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
